The JourneyWomxn Fund: Caregivers Program Retreats (CPR) is an outreach initiative of Where's Your Tree? Our program provides $300 micro-grants to attend retreats in safe, rural settings at no cost. These retreats are open to mid- and late-career BIPOC womxn who are New Jersey residents and caregivers. The program supports those balancing roles as artists, food growers, healers, and other responsibilities while striving to achieve their creative and personal goals.

ELIGIBILITY + faqs

ELIGIBILITY

Retreats open to BIPOC womxn who are NEWARK residents, and identify as female.

Applicants live in the world as caregivers and creative practitioners, reinforcing the program’s mission to support those who nurture others through their work and artistry. We are especially interested in womxn engaged in Newark’s urban food-growing and sustainability community.

1. Caregiving Role (Applicants must have at least 2-5 years experience in any of the following areas):

  • Health Caregiver – Employed in healthcare, social work, or education (e.g., nurses, first responders, home health aides, therapists, teachers, and social workers).
  • Family Caregiver – Provides primary care for elders, children with special needs, or other dependent family members.
  • Community Caregiver – Actively supports their community through leadership, volunteerism, mentorship, or advocacy.

2. Creative Arts or Wellness Practice (Applicants must also have 2-5 years of demonstrated practice in any of the following areas):

  • Artist – Visual, performance, media, or literary arts.
  • Food Grower – Farming, gardening, or food justice work.
  • Wellness Healer – Holistic health, traditional healing, yoga, doula work, or other wellness practices.
  • Community Activist/Organizer – Engaged in collective healing, justice work, or cultural preservation.
  • Educator – Uses creative or wellness-based methods in teaching and community education.

Other Important Considerations:

  • Connection to Nature & Rest – Applicants should have a desire to reconnect with nature and embrace rest. Comfort with rural settings, solitude, and alignment with the Where’s Your Tree? mission is essential.

  • Comfort with Solitude & Self-Direction – This is an independent residency experience with no structured programming. Applicants should enjoy being in their own company, setting their own schedule, and reflect the applicant's desire for renewal, creative exploration, and restorative care.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOw:

HOST PARTNERS:

Host Partners are friends and spirit allies who, in unique ways, help disrupt oppression and privilege by supporting the Where's Your Tree? vision of equity and access by graciously sharing their facilities without cost to deserving caregivers.  We are deeply grateful to each organization's leadership for affirming "in-kindness!"  All of our partner sites are fully vetted dwellings that have been experienced as safe, welcoming retreat locations for our Awardees.

HOUSING:

Residential facilities are provided by Host Partners, located on rural land sites that have been fully vetted. The in-kind donations of Host Partners offset the cost of housing an awardee for 5-7 days to take long walks, fulfill your passions, and commune with nature. In addition, each resident is provided a private studio or room at no cost, or a cabin equipped with a full kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and wifi.

MEALS:

Residents must purchase groceries (or bring them) and prepare their meals while in residence.

TRANSPORTATION:

Some locations are easily accessible by Amtrak, an essential benefit to city dwellers who may not drive or others who want to use fewer footprints.

GROUNDS:

Each site offers expansive wooded acres and walking paths, enjoyable in all four seasons. Expect to see wildlife of all kinds on these properties. Remember to bring appropriate clothing, footwear, and a flashlight. A rain jacket, walking stick, and bug spray are suggested for the warmer months. Smoking is not permitted.

SESSION SCHEDULE:

Residency dates are at the discretion of the Host Partner. Some offer flexible dates, and others are based on availability.

APPLICATION REVIEW+AWARD

Following a review of the application and letter of recommendation, micro-grants will be awarded to selected finalists to use funds as neeeded for travel, meals/groceries, and supplies.  All other discretionary expenses that exceed the grant allocation amount are the awardee's responsibility.

ORIENTATION MEETING: Each awardee is responsible to attend an introductory meeting with the Host Partner once selections are announced.

FINAL REPORT:

Awardees are expected to complete a brief report of their residency experience within 60 days of the residency.  In addition, awardees are required to submit a final report to document the experience and expenditures following the retreat.
